Abstract: By creating “Succès,” his first popular collection, Gaston Gallimard gambled on financing a book using books, diversifying his production, consolidating his commercial resources, and establishing himself as a publisher with a wide reach. Although it was not a success, this short-lived experiment was a link between two periods in a broader publishing history that led to the advent of the Livre de Poche as well as a stage in the unique history of this literary house.
