Abstract: When it comes to determining the success of poetic works, it quickly becomes apparent that poetry differs from the rest of the literary field. Notoriety is measured less by the number of reprints than by the popularity of a few quotations that leave their mark on memory and summarize a facet of collective sensibility or thought. A study of the cases of Voltaire, Jean-Baptiste Rousseau, Louis Racine, and Gresset allows us to outline the reasons for these successes and to understand how glory may give way to forgetting.
