  • Abstract: This article examines the way “minor” journalists talk about their own careers, and more specifically about a recurring motive: people become journalists because they have failed in their studies (law or medicine). This motive constructs an alternative and degraded image of the career of the “great provincial man in Paris”: that of the proletarian man or woman of letters, incompetent, and opting for journalism by default, for lack of a diploma.
