Abstract: Author dictionaries meet a need: addressing the prevailing lack of reference works on canonical writers. But the goal, to offer a comprehensive overview of a given author, is undermined by their alphabetical organization and, very often, the plurality of editors. This article reviews the methodological strategies that allow these contradictions to be overcome, making the dictionary a veritable hermeneutic puzzle.
