Abstract: Solitude as a theme and driving force of literary creation is particularly associated with one genre: the diary. Julien Green’s Journal illustrates the ambivalent nature of solitude, between awareness of one’s “singularity” and exploration of one’s “interior life.” He examines, in his own way, the intersection between European individualism and Christian traditions.
