Abstract: While nineteenth-century theater criticism has been explored by researchers, that of the twentieth century remains uncharted territory. The golden age of the written press, which was also the golden age of criticism, however, lasted until around 1970, and many writers, novelists, poets, and playwrights were professional audience members at some point in their careers, sometimes only to make ends meet. It is as creators, as artists, Thibaudet would have said, that they report on the performing arts either once a week, or night after night.
