Abstract: The present study focuses on sermons given by Protestant pastors in Alsace in 1917. Two themes dominate the sermons of this decisive year: the resignation of the German population due to the duration of the war and the 400th anniversary of the Reformation. By portraying Martin Luther as a German hero and a model of faith, the preachers sought to strengthen their listeners during the war.
