Abstract: According to Montesquieu, the existence of commercial republics is an evidence of the possibility of a republican political economy. However, notwithstanding the problem of the incompability between commerce and republican virtue, commerce by itself cannot equate economy which is linked with territory. Hence the question : are agrarian republics possible ?
