  • Abstract: While showing a clear bias in favour of the Presbyterian, partly based on novel economic arguments, and although some of his positions are close to those of John Calvin, the liberal ideas of Adam Smith lead to a reconsideration of the monopoly of the Church of Scotland. This allows to locate Smith among the most progressive segment of the Presbyterian Church, advocating a position, which differs a lot from the one of the Reformers.
