Abstract: This study focuses on the mechanisms of romantic communication between the protagonist of the Recherche and Albertine. Analyzing the communicational behavior of Cécile and her lover Robert in the novel Cécile by Theodor Fontane, it ponders to what extent the means of communication used by the protagonist in his investigations, such as the telephone, the letter, or the telegram, which suggest availability and control, create new ambiguities in communication with Albertine even after her death.
