Abstract: In the Recherche, the letter is often used as a tool of manipulation through its content. However, its persuasiveness is minimal. By contrast, it yields favorable results when the sender uses it for pure subterfuge, because it is not the letter’s content but the act of sending it that constitutes a manipulative ruse. The letter becomes effective when it departs from its persuasive content and functions as a manipulative event.
