Abstract: Critics have not yet successfully ascertained the status of Proust’s letters in relation to the Recherche. Some letters prepare sentences for the future novel well in advance, when the novel cycle was still a distant possibility. Others accompany the creation as a secondary voice. The letters are undoubtedly the crucible of Proust’s style, showing how each of his particularities emerged. But a typology of these relationships remains to be established.
