Abstract: This article examines the knotting of thought, emotion, and writing manifested in the breakup letters that the Narrator exchanges first with Gilberte, then with Albertine. Crucibles of violent emotions, contradictory reactions, and hermeneutic strategies doomed to failure, these letters in the Recherche are true “lettres de fuite,” where both love and meaning elude interpretation.
