Abstract: Proust’s reception in Russia shifted from militant denial to enthusiastic veneration. The two Bakhtin brothers mention him only rarely—but at the crucial moments when they define their concepts. While émigrés indulged in a cosmopolitan interpretation, an original critique, freeing Proust from sociological assimilation, struggled to develop amid Soviet condemnations.
