Abstract: The notion of the particular calls into question the relationship between the novel and moral philosophy. We may shed light on this relationship through a comparison of Proust’s minutiae of the particular and Bakhtin’s reflection on its two components, the specific and the individual. For both authors, no detail is insignificant, which is shown in particular by the use of proper nouns.
