Thomas Klinkert, « Proust est-il un auteur lisible ? »

In order to give a nuanced response to the question posed in the title, this introductory article revisits Paul de Man’s study, according to which Proust’s text is the allegory of its own unreadability, demanding a “blind” reader. It then offers a new interpretation of the episode of Swann concerned with reading, which de Man examines in his study. The article shows that, in developing a theory of fiction, Proust’s text conceives the reader not as blind but as clear-sighted.

Luc Fraisse, « Pourquoi rééditer Proust ? »
176The preparation of a new edition of Proust’s œuvres by Classiques Garnier prompts us to ask why we should republish this author, this contemporary classic. The episodic history of the publishing of Proust throughout the twentieth century reveals the still unresolved difficulties, both in the text and its annotation, that call for the resources a new revised edition is expected to provide, in relation to the setting of the text, punctuation, the design of variants, and the scope of explanatory notes.

This study clarifies some of the conditions and mechanisms by means of which Proust’s Recherche developed into a complex “hypertext.” It is centered on the analysis of the mechanisms of reading and rereading. On the basis of a brief analysis of the general conditions of Proust’s writing, we bring to light the practices of a supplementary writing, in the Derridean sense. Specifically, the aporias of the text and its narrative construction make it possible to apprehend the narrator’s experiences on the level of reading.

Olivier Pot, « La Recherche à l’ombre d’Augustin Thierry.

The “nominal reverie” of Proust’s Recherche is thrown into question by the plethora of “etymologies” that Brichot supplies for the Norman toponyms in Sodome et Gomorrhe. In reality, this archaeology of place names plunges the narrator into the “Merovingian night” of his childhood, as symbolized by the Combray church crypt, and whose poetry, according to Augustin Thierry, structures the two “sides”—aristocratic and bourgeois—of the “nation” that France forms—a bipolarity reactivated by the war of 1914–18.

Edi Zollinger, « Proust et Flaubert. Comment traduire l’intraduisible ? »

According to Elisabeth Edl, the translation of a novel must render discernible its multiple levels of interpretation. The translator has to read the original work as a score, and to show their sensitivity to the different meanings of each word and syllable. This article examines in detail two passages—the first drawn from the German translation of Madame Bovary, the second from the “Frankfurter Ausgabe” of Proust’s Recherche—two texts which have in common that they retell the myth of Arachne from Ovid’s Metamorphoses.

The stations on this journey are as follows: Vermeer: A Maid Asleep—seduced and abandoned. Proust: the game called Alphabet, which makes it possible to change Gilberte into Albertine. Proust’s Madeleine as avatar of a Wagnerian biscotte (Zwieback). The name Morel as avatar of the name Marcel. The name Ronsard transformed into poetry. The name Sponde transformed into poetry. How Racine says “Phaedra loves Hippolyte.” “Tied to Godot ?” or religion transformed into dramatic dialogue.

The understanding that a writer can display toward the characters of his own creation can sometimes attain a universal status when the interpretative dimension is supplemented with the dimension of a compassion that transcends moral judgment in favor of a grasp of the human condition. Taking examples from Flaubert (Madame Bovary, Un cœur simple), Baudelaire (“Je n’ai pas pour maîtresse…”, “La servante au grand cœur…”) and Proust (the Montjouvain scene in “Combray”) we attempt to find this idea in the texts.

The impressionist prose of Recherche adapts procedures of writing inspired by futuro-cubism. Juxtaposing Duchamp with Monet, the novelist exalts the anti-idealism line of argument, which he adopts in the wake of Laforgue (also a source for Duchamp). But Proust’s anti-idealism conceals an anti-dualism, usually explained in terms of phenomenology. Emphasizing spirit’s containment in a corporeal vessel, Proust asks of painting that it should incarnate an anti-representationalist philosophy.

One under-researched dimension of the Spanish novelist Carmen Martín Gaite is her reading of Proust. Her appropriation of Recherche is evident in her representation 180of remembrance, already present in Retahílas. In El cuarto de atrás, this influence develops into a fantastic rewriting of involuntary memory, which acts as an imaginary escape from the Franco dictatorship. The funereal imagery of Recherche is taken up in the leitmotifs of the “coffin-womb” and the book as “progeny.”
