Abstract: Plunging into the heart of Proust’s world reveals the centrality of suffering in the Recherche and brings out, at the deepest level, an unconscious text which works into us in silence. At the end of the journey, it is the Proust of Jean Santeuil who turns out to be politically neutral, while the great novel invests the Dreyfus affair with a central and radical function.
