Abstract: This article discusses the weak points of Elsa Gonçalves’ 2013 interpretation of the cantiga of Alphonse X, Joan Rodriguiz foi esmar a Balteira, and proposes a correction to verse 15 that, together with changes to the graphical layout of the text, enables a traditional reading of the cantiga: the text is based on an obscene double meaning in which the terms madeira (“wood”) and casa (“home”) signify, respectively, male and female sexual organs.
