Abstract: Critics have always been astonishingly lenient toward the Traité de la comédie. Nicole’s reasoning is endorsed without reflection, his arguments received without discussion, his point of view automatically presumed to be relevant. Through the lens of devotional theater, this article proposes a critical rereading of the treatise, identifying its logical strategies, aesthetic references, ethical foundations, and, above all, its theological postulates.
