Abstract: There is more than 400 Biblical references (quotations, allusions or reminiscences) in the letters Élie Neau sent from the galleys, which were printed in 1701 by Jean Morin, his former pastor. This article aims at exmining to what extent the shameful and painful sentence of the galleys worked for Élie Neau as a heuristic tool orientating his reading of the Bible while in jail.
