Abstract: Returning to a scenario from Monsieur Robillard, “The Serenade” evokes a failed attempt at musical seduction, leading to the punishment of Monsieur de la Tournelle’s lack of foresight. The would-be Petrarch is humiliated by Laura, a Muse linked with Sade just as he is with a historical figure rumoured to be impotent. The end of the poem recalls Nattier’s portrait of Marie-Anne de Mailly-Nesle showing her as Dawn pouring dew from a pitcher.
