Abstract: This article addresses Bartleby. A story of Wall Street through the prism of suffering. Against all odds, the pain of the eponymous character which suffuses the whole narrative is neither an object of investigation, nor a theme. The cause and history of Bartleby’s suffering will remain undisclosed to the narrator as well as to the reader of the tale.
