Abstract: This paper examines the writing of suffering in the light of Rhetorical treatises from the Ancien Regime. It focuses on lament that is both a theme and a kind of speech and demonstrates why according to Dutch humanist Gerard Vossius (1577-1649), lament requires little technics.
