Abstract: This paper offers two readings of Anne Cuneo’s Le Maître de Garamond (2002), one influenced by Michelet (1855), the other by Joan Kelly’s feminist historiography (1976), in order to show that the romantic trope of the powerful, criminal lady yields to a new trope, womens’ loss of agency.
