Abstract: Like a watermark, the reader of Stendhal’s novel comes across reflections which touch on political philosophy, and situations which make sense with reference to its theories. This inscribes the work in a current of thought which, from Hobbes to Nietzsche, places violence and fear at the heart of the question of the community.
