Abstract: The novel evokes the troubled image of the French Revolution, and the consequences of this under the Restoration. The Revolution informs a network of discursive palimpsests which appear in various guises. The way in which Revolutionary language is distorted reflects the confused heritage, both ideological and symbolic, of the Revolution.
