Abstract: At the end of 1832, Stendhal wrote an article on Le Rouge et le Noir for the Italian press. He defended the “modernity” and “novelty” of his work and provided a sociological analysis of reading in France of the 1830s, attempting to position his novel within the period’s horizon of expectations.
