Abstract: In 1928, Rachilde wrote Pourquoi je ne suis pas féministe, an essay in which she questioned the changing position of women and their desire for independence. She compares her own experience with that of the younger generation in order to show that any desire for emancipation is unnatural. This reactionary critique of society is a way for Rachilde to provoke public opinion and thus regain notoriety.
