Abstract:Quatrevingt-treize pits three historical forces against each other: Lantenac, Gauvain, and Cimourdain. Written in exile after Hugo’s defeat in the 1872 legislative elections, this historical epic, set in the years known as the Reign of Terror, is a culmination of the author’s thoughts about the French Revolution in light of the Paris Commune.
