Abstract: Livy’s Preface is here interpreted referring to the dedication of a monument. Indeed, the presence of the gods does not amount to an epic allusion : it is necessary to the inauguration of a monumentum that the historian sets out for his readers, by which he makes history accessible to a community resulting from the extension of citizenship to the whole of Italy.
