Abstract: The address by G. Pontano to G. Carbone, in elegy I, 40 of the Eridanus, illustrates the social virtue of conviviality, that the humanist has defined in one of his moral treatises. We can find here the ideal of civility that is an integral part of the subtle exploration of language conceived as the main conveyor of true humanitas.
