Abstract: How does the fantasy treat the “desire to fly” – one of the most ancient of the human dreams to which the genre responds? Often non-utilitarian, a thing of pleasure, and thus associated with the danger of the superhuman, flight, in the corpus studied, is a feature of creatures or objects with the magical gift of elevation, and privileged female companions with flying horses, of which dragons are the most emblematic type.
