Abstract: Aiming to become literary by way of description, Verne was actually relegated to the margins by this same description, carried away towards science by realism. This irony doubles as a paradox: anticipated as an agent of literariness, description was for Verne a privileged place of borrowings. Between the sublime and pedagogy, between creation and reproduction, description testifies to the paradoxes of writing in the Voyages extraordinaires.
