Abstract: Studying Ferdinand Freiligrath’s translations of the Orientales shows how the German poet significantly reinforced the Orientalist images, motifs, and stereotypes present in Hugo’s work. This comparison opens up possibilites for the systematic analysis of the numerous translations of Orientalist poetry which date from the nineteenth century.
