Abstract: Libertinage implies wealth, but the poor abound in the works of Sade. Their misfortune contrasts with the destiny of the rich, and illustrates the conflict at the heart of society. It justifies the refusal of law, and does not prevent ascending trajectories, as long as one turns to crime, like it feeds the cruel fantasies of the privileged, removed from any sort of compassion or charity.
