Abstract: This article evokes, by way of the Voyage en Turquie, various aspects of the great debate on poverty as it appeared in the Spain of Charles Quint. The problems linked to poverty, in the context of this modern and expanding Spain, are studied here in relation to three themes – begging and charity, begging monks, vagabondage – which demonstrate the Erasmian filiation of this work with certain heterodoxical aspects.
