  • Abstract: A witness of the offensive led in the Netherlands against vagabondage, Erasmus is resolutely hostile to begging in his œuvre, but constantly concerned about the fate of the “good and real poor”: those who work hard, not those who embrace a voluntary poverty. He tirelessly denounces the power of money but, like his friend Thomas More, is careful not to advocate the pooling of goods, preferring to reinforce the Christian duty of alms-giving.
