Abstract: Destined to have an exceptional literary fate, the hoaxer is but one of the many heroes who appeared at the turn of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries in Europe. A modern hero, despite his evident parentage with the characters of medieval fabliaux, he reflects a new ideology in which the pauper and vagabond seek to survive by way of ruses.
