Abstract: In these paintings, the poor are instrumentalised and often represented in passing in works designed to exalt the mercy of other characters, saints, kings or queens. They are also the subject of portraits in the paintings of Murillo who responded to the requests of his foreign (Catholic) clients in Flanders and his commercial clients from Seville.
