Abstract: This article provides a global vision of the problems generated by poverty in the Spanish context throughout the modern era. The most significant contributions to the debate on poverty in the sixteenth century are also examined in relation to events in social history (crises, initiatives, the social context) and the history of thought (authors, legitimisation, social interventions, ideological debates, the common use of sources of authority).
