Abstract: Focusing on the Œuvres of Hélisenne de Crenne, Amadis de Gaule and Arnalte et Lucenda by Herberay des Essarts, and L’Amant ressuscité de la mort d’amour (1558), this work studies a common tendency to multiply modalising expressions which present the utterance as assured, underlining the personalisation of writing habits and connecting the use of the process to its sources. It thus fulfils the function of an illusionary expressivity, while at the same time reflecting the spiritual atmosphere of French evangelism.
