Abstract: The writing down of laws in ancient Greece gave a new form of authority to speech. Not only could the law be known by everyone, imposing itself in its monumental materiality, but it was expressed by a formula anticipating that of the classical decrees. The authoritative words revealed there were collective; they were those of the city.
