Abstract: In its various forms, speech from on-high in Rome was generally inscribed in a particular space: the forum, the symbolic heart of the republican city. The transformations of this exceptional frame show that speech from on-high was at the heart of Roman political culture. When the Empire came, speech from on-high was maintained but transformed. The principal change was that the speech of the prince gradually asserted itself, and took on new functions.
