Abstract: This contribution considers whether in Middle French, direct speech (in narrative texts) and dialogues in the theatre differ from each other in the way they represent spoken language. In order to answer this question, this paper examines the development of two interjections (di and tenez) and the syntactic properties of yes/no interrogatives (mainly the emergence of 'subject-verb' word order and the non-use of negative ne).
