Abstract: This paper deals with the influence of Italian on sixteenth-century French. Based on a qualitative analysis of 120 French letters written by Caterina de’ Medici, the study reveals numerous interferences, in particular on the lexical level, which confirm the observations made by sixteenth-century purists such as Henri Estienne.
