Abstract: In 1731, “memoirs” do not yet constitute a “genre” subject to a clear mode of reading. This novel marks an important stage in the genesis of the genre to the extent that its preliminary versions condense a large number of characteristic topoi. It is at the cross-roads of four ‘memoir’ paradigms born in the late seventeenth century.
