Abstract: Marc Hersant re-examines the opinion of the first of Marivaux’s readers regarding the real or fictional nature of Marianne’s memoirs. Comparing the text with authentic, historical memoirs, he identifies a series of indicators which, for the reader of the epoch, would clearly signal the work out as fiction.
