Abstract: This study explores the character of Mme Dutour. After having recalled her place in the novel, it focuses on the terms used to refer to her, particularly the distinction between Mme Dutour and “la Dutour”. Is this distinction in line with good manners? Does it respond to a determined logic? An examination of all occurrences confirms that it corresponds to an expertly thought-out plan, with considerable implications for the narrative and the values which are staged.
