Abstract: Despite progess made over the last twenty years, the study of lexical productivity remains a thorny issue because of definitional but also methodological difficulties, especially concerning the discursive variation of productivity. Thus, this paper examines the descriptive categories essential to the study of productivity (author, genre, style, register, etc.) in order to promote a more critical and precise methodology in this research field.
