Abstract: The aim of this study is to determine the relative proportions of the different types
of word formation and their impact on contemporary Peninsular Spanish as indicators of
lexical trends. The study is based on the analysis of a significant corpus obtained from
the 2004 Alvar Ezquerra dictionary containing Spanish neologisms. The productivity of
each category of neologism is established so as to determine their relative position one
to another. S. Mejri suggests that suffixation is far and away the most important type of
lexical formation in French. Is this also the case in Spanish ?
